What is Sedation Dentistry?
Dr. Flynn and his team understand that many patients are hesitant about dental visits due to anxiety or fears. Dr. Flynn offers different levels of anesthesia and sedation for your comfort! Dr. Flynn will assess each patient and recommend a level of sedation for his or her relaxation. This is all done in order to optimize our patient’s long-term outcome and assume minimal complications during the procedure.
Nitrous oxide therapy or “laughing gas” is a mild sedative that is commonly used in dentistry. It is a color-less and odor-less gas that is administered through a small mask over your nose. The patient is able to achieve a level of relaxation as well as reduce pain during the procedure.
Dr. Flynn offers oral sedation for patients who prefer a more moderate level of sedation. Some patients are given oral medications while dental work is performed under strict monitoring of the patient. Others are in a deeper state of relaxation, with responsiveness to light stimulation. Patients may feel drowsy and may sleep during the procedure. Those who choose are required to have a driver present and follow a few pre-procedural recommendations.
General Anesthesia is a controlled state of unconsciousness where a patient cannot feel, see or hear anything during the procedure. The medication can be administered through various routes and is an extension of deep sedation, helping limit movement and discomfort during dental treatment. A highly trained and specialized anesthesiologist is required to provide this type of anesthesia to assure absolute patient safety. Dr. Flynn and his staff are trained to provide this service at Innovative Periodontics & Implants!
